Q: What is Disaster Hero?

A: Disaster Hero is a free online game designed to teach children (grades 1 through 8), parents, and teachers/caregivers how to prepare for disasters. The overall goals are to ensure that players know what to do before, during, and after a disaster. Parents and teachers are included so that the family and school are familiar with the main concepts of disaster preparedness. Emphasis is placed on three steps – make a plan, get a kit, and be informed.

A: Yes. There is no cost to play Disaster Hero.

Q: Do I need to sign up to play Disaster Hero?

A: No, if you play Disaster Hero as a Guest, you do not need to sign up. However, your scores will not be saved if you play as a Guest. We suggest that players sign up so that your scores and badges you earn will be saved.

Q: Do I need to download anything to play Disaster Hero?

A: No. Disaster Hero will work with all major web browsers. You need to have the latest version of Adobe Flash installed to play Disaster Hero. You can download the latest version of Adobe Flash for free here http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.

Q: What are the levels of difficulty in Disaster Hero?

A: There are three levels of difficulty players can choose in Disaster Hero: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze level is recommended for early readers (grades 1 through 3). Silver is recommended for average readers (grades 4 through 6). Gold is recommended for advanced readers (grades 7 and 8).

A: After signing in, you can go to the My Hero page to view your high scores and all the badges you have earned while playing Disaster Hero.

A: Unlock extra clothing items by earning Achievement badges in the game.

Q: Is there a certificate I can print out after becoming a Disaster Hero?

A: Yes. After beating a Disaster Hero opponent, return to the My Hero page and click on one of the Hero Badges to print a certificate showing your successful completion of that disaster scenario.

Q: What is the scope of the content covered in Disaster Hero?

A: Disaster Hero covers four main topic areas: (1) basic preparedness steps – including get a kit, make a plan, and be informed – to be accomplished to protect the participant and family before, during, and immediately following a disaster or large-scale emergency event, (2) common disasters (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes), their associated danger signals, typical effects, common injuries, and appropriate responses, (3) basic quick-care tips and techniques for specific common injuries, and (4) basic information about geographic-specific disasters.
